I enjoyed the subtleties of each one of the stories, not always sure of the outcome. It was interesting trying to guess. How could you not recommend this book to all your friends.

I bought this book because the author is my cousin that i've never met. Our mothers were sisters. It is a good read. She is talented and i would read all her works. The only reason i didn't give it 5 stars is because i'm not a big fan of short stories. I like novels with more detail. But for it being a short story she gets her point a cross and doesn't leave you guessing at the end. So i will order more.
Somehow Delilah's cases never end up neat and tidy. There's always some unknown factor that ends up twisting things around and threatening her. But she's not about to give up...

I would never have met this author if it weren't for Brash Books. They have brought old books back to life in new editions. Ms. O'Callaghan writes about a hard, almost harsh, female detective who will take on the world to solve her case. This is walking, talking noir and there's not a lot of good noir left in the world. I was happy to see more of her work published. This is a collection of short stories and is the third book of her work I've read.

These stories are short and to the point Men trying to kill their wives, missing diamonds, the mob, and more. I worked my way through them in short order and enjoyed each one. My favorite one is the last story. The woman thinks her husband or her best friend is trying to kill her by hiding her inhalant that is for emergency use that she carries in her purse. It's a much more benign reason the inhalant disappeared.

For a blast of the past and to see how good stories can be written without a lot of words, you need to read Ms. O'Callaghan's work. She's a master of this craft.
I am always on the lookout for a new, well written female detective series. There are some Grand Masters out there that I adore, but the problem is that I can read faster than they can write. So when I was given the opportunity to check out Delilah West, a sleuth whose stories originated during the latter half of the 20th century, I jumped on it, and I am so glad I did. Delilah West may be cozy at times, but she is never cutesy or smarmy, and “never pert”. She never wonders why she didn’t bring her gun, because she always has the sense to have it with her. In Bad News and Trouble, we are treated to seven short stories, each of which is a separate case that Delilah describes to us. The suspense is thick, but now and then the feverish pace slackens just long enough to bring a good, hearty guffaw from the reader. Each episode is set primarily in California. She is a lone wolf, independent and smart as hell. She knows how to get things done, and she never has to call on a big strong man to save her personal ass. Believe it.

My favorite among the stories is second to the last, “Going to the Dogs”, a case in which a client is convinced that someone out there is trying to steal one of her dogs. I won’t give away the goods, but I will tell you that it kept me on the edge of my seat, made me laugh out loud more than once, and the ending was unusually satisfying.

You’ll have to excuse me now. Brash has more Delilah West stories on tap, and I am going to go find them. You should do the same.
I really like the Delilah West character as well as O'Callaghan's others. An added bonus the supporting casts of characters are always delightful as well.
