I bought this and have loved reading it. I am staying with close friends - extended family really - for the Christmas holiday, and I can't wait to share this story with them on Christmas morning. I will read it to them before we open any gifts because I know it will make us appreciate our gifts and our ability to give them to each other more than we have ever done before. In this frightening time of crowds and ringing cash registers that turn department stores into something resembling a casino in Las Vegas, the message from Lilly is clear: Sharing is Giving in the truest and purest sense of the word. When I was growing up Jewish in the Midwest surrounded by Christian and catholic families , my mother made sure we had a tree because it was a festive thing to do and so that we kids didn't feel left out. Sherman Hellen's reminiscence of his growing up and his Mother's warmth , faith and humanist outlook on life and Christmas is humorous and moving . A real holiday treat.
Though this seems to be a story tailor made for the holidays. It's a time piece of decency, kindness, the human spirit and of ordinary people doing extraordinary acts, not because there was anything in it for them, but because it was right. This is reminder of the good within us all and something which should be shared with our children and theirs as a reminder what it means to be human.
As someone who grew up with a variety of December holidays in a blended family, I have never read anything in any form that better summarized how important this time of year is for everyone-no matter your culture or beliefs. Heartwarming, but not sticky-sweet...stick this in the stocking of someone you love (OK....or in a ...things have changed since the time of this story, to be sure...)
Warmly evocative and gleaming with wit, this story will transport readers to a specific time and place, but the message it offers is universal & timeless.
Great book, nice and short!
You don't have to be a Jewish kid from New York who grew up with a Christmas tree (though it doesn't hurt) to enjoy and appreciate the grace and generosity of A Christmas Lilly, or to enter the world and time about which it's written. Sherman Yellen's choice of words and images is impeccable. Until his complete memoir is ready for us to read, give yourself the gift of this story.
