I love the covers on Anderson books. They are simple but appealing. This story took a little bit before the H/h really start to like one another. Meredith Kenyon is hiding with her 4 year old daughter Sammy. Once you begin to understand what her life was like before Oregon you can see why she does not trust easily. Her daughter is scared of most everything and when a stray Rottweiler shows up at their house Merry calls her neighbor, the sheriff, to come get his beast.

Heath Masters is a 38 year old bachlor and is use to receiving his share of chaotic phone calls but when he also hears the racket taking place outside he knows things have gotten out of control. Heath is such a great H once he makes up his mind what is important to him. He has lived his life upholding the law. It stems back to a tragedy that took place when he was 19 years old. He has tried to make up for an accident that his father has never forgave him for.

If youv'e read CA's book before you are aware what she can deliver if you haven't she developes a beautiful relationship between H/h. It is not a simple Wham Bam thank you Maam. Silver Thaw is still my favorite so far but this one has some interesting twist with organized crime. It is not over done but borderline because Heath has a conflict with his duty and what is right but of course it is understandable with all considered. The relationship with Sammy and him is sweet and he gives her that security tha tevery child should have.

One of the villains in the story is Meredith's late husband and at one point in the story she explains how he delighted in scaring her and what he chose to do it with was spiders. He hid spiders in various spots at vulnerable moments to get a charge from her fear. I was so freaked out because I too can relate to how she must have felt from the shock and frequency of his game. There is a couple love scenes and they are descriptive but tasteful. This book is free from other characters that have romantic interest in either the H/h but it is not without obstacles. Enjoy!

Catherine Anderson has the wonderful ability to truly introduce the reader to her characters. You know them. You relate to them and feel their anguish and pain. In this story she places many obstacles in front of love but it prevails. Very well written and an enjoyable read.
This could not be called a gentle read due to underlying story of not just an abusive relationship but a relationship where you were tortured but overall great love story between dog,child,mother an a sheriff that has his own past. I love. Happy ever after and this is it.
A lot of emotion between characters.. Helps you see that there are ways to solve problems without violence. Would make a good hallmark movie. The men in all her books are the ideal husband that most women are looking for. I have read most of the Coulter and harrigan families as well as the mystic creek series

first one was as good as the second,third, fourth as many as she has written ....LOL )
The series meaning the Harrigans as well as the Kendrick/Coulter series was just as interesting as this one.

When you read a Catherine Anderson novel you know there will be anguish, her heroines are usually women who have become strong because the only alternative is becoming nothing. I Meredith's case she had to take care of her daughter and she found the strength to fight her way out of a terrible situation so that she would have the time to make a new life for both of them.

When the town sheriff realizes his new neighbour is a woman with a child he decides to steer clear of any involvement but he forgot to tell his dog Goliath. The resulting encounter between them is funny, sad and hopeful.

I loved the story and the characters were clearly meant to be together. This is a lovely but heartfelt story of what happens when you never give up and are determined to keep your promises.
As if dealing with small town politics and a deputy with an inflated opinion of his ability to take over Heath's job of sheriff, he's jerked into a puzzling dilemma dealing with his new neighbor. The lovely lady seems to have an irrational fear of dogs and Heath's well-trained Rottweiler, a decorated veteran, is no exception. Between budget cuts and his out-of-control deputy who's convinced the locals that Heath isn't using the departments funding effectively. When he volunteers to repair his neighbors shabby house, she balks at having not only a nosy neighbor, but one that's a Sheriff. Afraid Sheriff Heath will uncover her secret, she debates whether to stay or run once more to protect her child from the terror in her past.The more she pushes him away, the more his innate sense of trouble afoot makes him question what the woman is hiding. Ms. Anderson weaves the many strands of this story into another story of the 'what ifs' life hands us sometimes.
Really liked this book. One of this authors best, I think.
It's a little dark at times. Meredith is coming out of a very bad relationship and some of the abuse is described. So, if you have trouble with spousal abuse, this may not be the book for you.
There is healing for both main characters and way more good than bad.
It seemed real to me as well that she healed slowly and didn't just trust immediately.
Also Heath had to understand that she wasn't judging him for being abusive when she was frightened, she was just learning to trust and love again. So it made a great story for them to find their way through this mess together.
The little girl is cute and well written. The dog is funny.
I very much recommend this book and this author.
